Retro Recorder App Reviews

I recently purchased the Retro Recorder and I am really amazed by this little app. The ALX feature which basically enriches, softly compresses and vitalizes the recorded audio signal is simply awesome, very natural but gives you "that" processed broadcasting sound. You can clearly hear the experience which McDSP gathered over the years and put it into that little app. I really can recommend the Retro Recorder since it turns your iPhone not just into "another" audio recorder. Furthermore, a really cool feature is to export the processed (with ALX) or unprocessed signal and be able to access your recorded tapes via webbrowser from e.g. your desktop computer and download the files as .wav format. If you are really looking for a professional audio recording application for your iPhone I can really recommend checking out that great app. Keep on rocking, McDSP! :)

perfect tool, easy to use, sounds great.

But it does need an update for iOS 8 and the new iPhone 6! The company makes nice Apps, but they dont bother updating them for the people who bought them, because not enough people bought them. Not fair Id say ...

Great looks and functions. Easy to get off the iphone which is usually one of the more difficult things to do. Nicely organized. ALX is great - makes things louder and clearer - a bit unclear as to what it is doing but it works. I have several recorders (iProRecorder, Irecorder,4track) and i like this best. Would like to know the difference between recording with ALX and playback with ALX

I just love this app - the sound is great and the cassette theme is heartwarming to those of us who started out using the old technology! The only things that would make it even cooler would be fast forward and rewind buttons and the tape spools spinning with the sound of them spinning!

Im a huge fan and user of McDsps professional audio recording plug ins. I also dig Retro Recorder but it would be great if there was a pause button. How about a threshold control that automatically pauses when under the desired threshold. Basic waveform editing would be great but not exactly retro. Well done Colin and Co!

Easy to use. Cool retro design. But getting three failure messages on the fjrst try... Disappointing.

Downloaded this app on to my iPhone 4 & I can barely hear anything. Dont know what Im doing wrong. Not worth the money even if its only 99 cents

Great app, but the icon needs a hi res update for iOS 5, also no need for the sale sign on it, is that so hard to do McDsp!!

Unlike dictation apps, this one keeps going for a long time. Just what I needed to record a speech I attended recently. ALX is just compression, but you can export without ALX if you want to adjust audio in a more robust audio editing app. Connection with Mac over wifi works seamlessly for me.

Ive used this for years for taking quick notes for music ideas. Its simple to use and friendly to look at. The ALX feature sounds good enough that I leave it on.

Very creative and impressive "retro" look, and very easy to use. Add a Pause for recording, and an Auto-Pause (for recording only when there are sounds), and it would be my portable recorder of choice!

Sound quality is terrible plus it is bit archaeic. I prefer advanced tech tools not old school out dated concepts.

Im an audio professional, and I assure you this app rocks. Quality is way better with the ALX limiter, and its great that its non destructive. This company makes fantastic plugins for the pro market and it really shows the difference...

Okay, now Im about to move on to my 5th recording app for the iPhone. Im a musician, and Id like to be able to record my band during rehearsal without having to breakout my macbook pro, but it looks like Im just dreaming...Anyway, what I hate about his app: 1. Transferring recordings to the computer is a 4 step process I dont have time for. Its the worst Ive seen so far - Very archaic! 2. Sound distorts with loud volume, and there is no way to adjust the input level. 3. Labeling your recordings is a NIGHTMARE. AVOID THIS APP!

Not a great app for live performance recording at higher volumes. Plus, the downloading process is horrible! Waste of money.

This is such a great recorder; it picks up all the sounds around the room! You can really hear the difference between the regular recorded version and the ALX version (you get both versions.) In meetings, I can hear everyone in the room- it boosts the volume of the people far away (that I cant even hear in the normal recorded version) without making the people close too loud. Great when recording recitals when you cant get too close.

... Lacks stsndard file mgt. functions, like folders or date stamps. Uploading to a web browser works OK and the original time stamp is visible then, but managing more than a handful of files on the iPhone side is very difficult. Recording is excellent, the AMX compressor helps with low levels e.g. at a class or meeting. It appears the recording of loud sounds on the iPhone is impossible unless an external volume controlling step like a little mixer is used. The problem is that software can only drop the level past the point at which distortion has already taken place. I think its well worth a dollar for the AMX compressor and good quality sound, hoping they will add some file management functions.
